March 27, 2013: A really big date for the Big Blue Nation... who knew?

Who knew that March 27th was such a big day in the Big Blue Nation? For those of you who are not from Kentucky, Big Blue is the Kentucky Wildcats and March 27th is a big day indeed. In 1951, Kentucky beat Kansas 68 – 58 to win the NCAA Championship in men’s basketball. In 1972, Adolph Rupp, the great and historic coach of the UK Wildcat’s men’s basketball team, retired and passed the mantle on to Coach Joe B. Hall. Joe B. was the coach when I started attending the University of Kentucky in 1978. Speaking of 1978, on this date in 1978, UK beat Duke 94 – 88 to win the national championship when most people had their money on dUKe. This year has not been the greatest but Rupp Arena is still the greatest place in the country to watch basketball. How does all of this tie in to Disney? Disney released the movie, Glory Road, which tells the story of how Don Haskins led Texas Western to the NCAA Championship in 1966 and who did they beat for the national championship? Adolph Rupp’s UK Wildcats. Rupp was played by Jon Voight, and even when we lose, it’s historic. So go to Walt Disney World and to honor the Cats stay at, or visit, the All-Star Sports Resort. We did, and we loved it.

Today is Quirky Country Music Song Titles Day. Man are there some good ones: “If you leave me, can I go too,” “Bathroom of your heart,” “Every time I itch, I end up scratching you,” “She thinks my tractor’s sexy,” “There’s a tear in my beer,” “Red Solo Cup,” and my personal favorite, “Dropkick me Jesus, through the Goalpost of Life” by Bobby Bare. There’s dozens out there, go look them up and have a good laugh. After that, go to Frontierland, in The Magic Kingdom and enjoy the Country Bear Jamboree where you can hear the immortal, “Blood on the Saddle.” If you don’t want to take the time, “May the Bird of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose.”

Today is Viagra Day. I don’t have anything to say about that. I really don’t. Stop it.

On this date in 1901 the inimitable Carl Barks was born in Merrill, Oregon. Carl drew Donald Duck comic books for over 30 years. Barks invented Duckburg, Scrooge McDuck and Gladstone Gander. He was inducted as a Disney Legend in 1991. Get on over to the Animal Kingdom and take in Donald’s Breakfast buffet. We did it when it was Donald’s Breakfastasaurus but now it is at the Tusker House and it is Donald’s Dining Safari. It’s a great way to meet a bunch of characters and get an awesome belly full of breakfast food. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and there’s bacon…

Lest we forget, if there was no Florida, there would be no Walt Disney World (and maybe no Walt, his mom and dad were married in Florida). On this date in 1513, Juan Ponce de Leon discovered Florida. Legend is that he was looking for the fountain of youth. When I was five I drank from the fountain of youth is St. Augustine, Florida. That may explain a lot, that, and all that mercury I played with in Jim Cheek’s chemistry class. If you drive to WDW, enjoy some of the other great places in Florida. We love the whole state from top to bottom and you will too.

This proves it, Matt loves Florida.

Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.
