January 3, 2013: Sip your soda and enjoy a fine MGM picture...

There was no school yesterday in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Black ice. Oh, well. That means that the last day of school will now be May 10, 2013. The last day of school around here is a very flexible date, bad weather does not clear quickly in the hills and hollows of Eastern Kentucky. Some of the roads in the county are barely passable by buses in the best of weather, much less with snow and ice on them. So we learn to go with the flow. Remember, NBD.

In 1924, Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and the Louis B. Mayer Company merge to create Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer or MGM. MGM was a monster of a movie company and eventually teamed up with Disney to open Disney-MGM Studios. Now that partnership has ended but the park is still there. Get on over to Disney Hollywood Studios and enjoy what started as a real, working studio as well as a park.

Today is National Drinking Straw Day and specifically the day that Marvin Stone patented the paper drinking straw. Now, you know that at Walt Disney World you get plastic straws, not paper straws or… do you? It depends. At the Animal Kingdom, in an effort to be as eco-friendly as possible (and as a safety issue for the animals), you will find only paper straws. So get to the Animal Kingdom and drink your soda like it’s 1888, before that you would have used a rye grass straw.

Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.
