November 13, 2012: Whip it good!

Open house at school last night from 4 PM until 6 PM and 8th grade had more parents to visit than any other grade at Louisa Middle School; Now, on to our academic team meet tonight against Holy Family from Ashland, KY. Our students are having a great season and this will be the first time in recent years that we have competed with Holy Family.

Speaking of family, one of our family traditions is Dole Whip at the Magic Kingdom, or the Polynesian or at the Kentucky State Fair. That’s right, the Kentucky State Fair has Dole Whip as well and Dole Whip is your first excuse for visiting Walt Disney World today.

On this date in 1895, the first shipment of canned pineapple from Hawaii took place. And pineapple Dole Whip is definitely my favorite. As a diabetic, I sparingly partake of sweets but I do what I must to enjoy at least one heaping cup of cold pineapple goodness. Have an adventure in Adventureland and whip up a bit of cool, citrus delight.

In 1940, Walt Disney gave us ballet hippos, Chernabog, and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, not to mention the Sorcerer himself, one Yensid. “Fantasia” was released on this date. Walt was really reaching with this ambitious piece of art to point of designing an entirely new sound system, Fantasound, for display of the picture, which resulted in “Fantasia” being the first motion picture with stereo sound. Many things conspired to keep the film from being profitable during its initial release: Europe was at war and European distribution was cut off (America would not enter the war for another year), the production cost of the film was enormous for the time and it wasn’t cheap to install the Fantasound equipment in theaters exhibiting the movie. Over time the movie not only turned a profit but also spawned several different versions and even a sequel, “Fantasia 2000.” Get over to Disney’s Hollywood Studios and enjoy some “Fantasia” themed attractions. Start with the Great Movie Ride which features a scene from the movie, then cap off your day with Fantasmic, the nighttime spectacular which features Sorcerer Mickey taking on a host of Disney villains who have invaded his dreams and attempt to defeat him with a nightmare Fantasmic!

I’m tired.

Enjoy another day at Walt Disney World. The countdown is on for the return of our favorite cast member, Conductor Brittany, on the Walt Disney World Railroad in the Magic Kingdom. Look for her in December and tell her that we said howdy.

And always remember, your best excuse is: waiting for your dreams to come true.
