May 8, 2013: The buck stops here. President Truman will not ride Dumbo.

Twelve days and counting until the last day of school in Lawrence County Kentucky and it seems like school started only yesterday. State testing begins on Monday and that takes up most of the last two weeks of school. Here’s wishing all the best for our students and staff as we wrap up another year.

A simple haberdasher from Missouri, Harry Truman, the 33rd President of the United States, was born on this date in 1884. Harry’s parents added the letter S to his name but he had no middle name. Truman was FDR’s last running mate, he had almost no contact with Roosevelt and, upon becoming President, he had no knowledge of the atomic bomb. In 1957 Mr. Truman visited Disneyland and rode almost every ride but he did not ride Dumbo. Truman didn’t want anything to do with any elephant, even Dumbo. Let’s break with our tradition of The Hall of Presidents and go ride Dumbo out of respect for the Democrat President who did not want to ride the elephant.

“Hey, you big hockey puck!” Don Rickles was born on this day in 1926. Rickles has made a career out of insulting the greats stars of our day. I always looked forward to Don Rickles appearing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and it always seemed that Johnny genuinely enjoyed Don’s wit and sharp tongue. Don Rickles also has a special place in our little corner of the World, the role of Mr. Potato Head in Toy Story and the voice of William in The Enchanted Tiki Room. So go shooting at Toy Story Midway Mania or relax for a few minutes in The Enchanted Tiki Room, either way you’ll share a few minutes with Don and that’s got to be better than your normal life, you hockey puck!

Quickies:

1886: Jacob’s Pharmacy serves the first Coca-Cola fountain drink. Go to Club Cool and enjoy Coke products from around the world.

1952: Mad Magazine debuts. What, me worry?

Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.
