Today is Kiss and Make Up Day. In our family, we argue, we fight, and we
make up. It’s how we’ve lasted almost 25 years. I’ve seen people let things
fester and grow to the point that they break so badly it can never be fixed.
Let it go. Kiss, make up and let it go. There’s any number of appropriate
locations at WDW where you can make it happen.
Walt Kelly was born on this day in 1913 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Walt was best known for his Pogo comics
but he also worked for Walt Disney. His work was not shabby either: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio,
Dumbo and Fantasia. Go to the
Magic Kingdom, ride Dumbo and eat at Pinocchio’s Fest Haus.
On this day in 1930,
Sean Connery was born in Scotland. Before he was, “Bond, James Bond” he was
Michael McBride in Darby O’Gill and the
Little People. It was Connery’s performance in that film that earned him
the role of 007 in Dr. No. Take part
in the great Disney spy game with Agent P at EPCOT.
Regis Philbin was
born on this day in 1933 in New York City. Live
with Regis & Kathie Lee was Disney’s entry in daytime television and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire was such a
hit that it spawned an attraction at Disney-MGM Studios. MGM is gone and so is
the Millionaire attraction but you can ride Toy Story Midway Mania, which
occupies the space that formerly housed the Millionaire attraction.
There once was a
young man working on The Fox and the
Hound at a time when Disney Animation was quickly foundering and seemingly
losing its way. The young man was released by Disney but, after growing up (and
perhaps growing stranger), the young man returned to Disney to make Disney a
little stranger and a little better. Tim Burton was born on this day in 1958 in
Burbank, California. My daughter loves Tim Burton and John Lassiter as much as
she does Walt. In fact, I think that Lassiter and Burton are Walt Disney to
her. They carry different parts of that spark that makes truly creative people
special and dear to our hearts. James and
the Giant Peach, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory, Ed Wood, Big Fish… not all Disney but all
wonderful, fanciful, surrealistic views of life with its head cocked a few
degrees off skew. The one complaint I have against The Magic Kingdom? I wish they
would do some form of the Nightmare overlay for The Haunted Mansion like they
do at Disneyland. Until they do, enjoy the Mansion as is and look for the Jack
items at the cart outside.
Here is one of those
odd moments in life. My wife, daughter and son are all cousins to our next
subject, born on this day in 1961 in Flatwoods, Kentucky. I guess I could claim
kin but I figure if it’s not blood then it’s not a real relation. Billy Ray
Cyrus, father to Miley, actor and country music star is celebrating his birthday
today. Bazeal Hayes, patriarch of Deana’s family is also the great whatever
grandfather of Billy Ray and Miley. Not only did he star on Hannah Montana but he also provided the
voice of Buck Buckerson for Phineas and
Ferb. Look for that little house from The
Hannah Montana Movie in the queue for The Back Lot Tour.
Remember, your best
excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.
