Today is National Navajo Code Talkers Day. In
1982, President Reagan declared this day in honor of the Native Americans whose
service in the Pacific during World War II was unknown to most Americans.
During the war, code machines did not work well in the jungles of the Pacific;
Navajo “code talkers” translated English code words in the Navajo language,
which the Japanese could not decode because of the obscure nature of the Navajo
tongue. Honor the Code Talkers by visiting the jungles of the Animal Kingdom.
Steve Martin was born on this date in 1945 in
Waco, Texas. Starting at age 10, Martin worked at Disneyland after school, on
weekends and during the summer. Martin started out selling guides at the front
gate and had various other jobs including working in Merlin’s Magic Shop on
Main Street. Martin worked at Disneyland until he was 18. Named a Disney legend
in 2005, Martin went on to have a successful career as a writer, musician,
comedian and actor. He appears in Fantasia
2000, Father of the Bride and Shopgirl
for Disney. Honor Martin by playing Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom and
recalling his magic shop days.
Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.
