August 17, 2013: Geocaching, Davy Crockett and Artemis Fowl.

Today is International Geocaching Day. I have been geocaching since 2004 and I still teach classes in geocaching with my students at Louisa Middle School. Geocaching is a sport where individuals hide boxes (some full of prizes) and mark their location with a GPS. The location is posted on the Geocaching.com website and then geocachers go out and find the hidden boxes. It is fun and we have been doing it since there were actual boxes hidden at Walt Disney World. Several years ago they rounded up the physical caches and removed them but the virtual caches still remain and there are several in the parks and the surrounding area. Go to geocaching.com, enter the zip code for Lake Buena Vista and be amazed at how many there are to find. Look for me, my handle is "Big Willie."

The container from a cache titled "Destination Disney World."

Today is National Thrift Shop Day. My brother-in-law, Paul Hayes, has a thrift shop (The River Side Shop) in Louisa, Kentucky. I know a lot of people who love thrift shopping. When you are at Walt Disney World there are outlets with Disney Parks merchandise nearby. Go, shop, enjoy.

1786: Davy Crockett was born in what is now Greene County, Tennessee. Crockett was a politician, frontiersman and soldier. “The King of the Wild Frontier” became a cultural icon in Disney movies as portrayed by Fess Parker. Visit Frontierland where I am sure Davy would have felt right at home.

1958: Belinda Carlisle, the lead singer of The Go-Go’s was born in Hollywood, California. Carlisle recorded “I Won’t Say (I’m in Love)” for Hercules and The Go-Go’s will perform in the Eat to the Beat Concert Series at the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival September 30 and October 1. Hey, you get a chance to see one of honorees live at Walt Disney World. Go, listen, enjoy.

1986: Luxo Jr. the first film produced by Pixar Animation Studios premiered in Dallas, Texas. Luxo is part of the Pixar logo and, at one time, made appearances at Disney-MGM Studios (now Hollywood Studios). He appeared across the street from Toy Story Midway Mania but only for a short time. We were fortunate enough to see Luxo, who knows, he might show up again some day.

1939: Wizard of Oz opens at Loew’s Capitol Theater in New York. Celebrate the movie on The Great Movie Ride at Hollywood Studios.

1943: Robert De Niro was born in New York City. De Niro is one of our great American actors and he is now in a partnership with Disney and the Weinsteins to produce Artemis Fowl movies. Let’s wait and see if there is one day an Artemis Fowl attraction at WDW. In the meantime, stop by The Writer’s Stop and have a carrot cake cookie while you wait.

Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.
