Today is National Navajo Code Talkers Day. In 1982, President Reagan declared this day in honor of the Native Americans whose service in the Pacific during World War II was unknown to most Americans. During the war, code machines did not work well in the jungles of the Pacific; Navajo “code talkers” translated English code words in the Navajo language, which the Japanese could not decode because of the obscure nature of the Navajo tongue. Honor the Code Talkers by visiting the jungles of the Animal Kingdom.
