June 23, 2013: Moon over Daytona Beach

On this date in 1963, The Enchanted Tiki Room, the first attraction to feature audio-animatronics opened to the public at Disneyland. The attraction is repeated for Walt Disney World and, for a short time, altered to become The Enchanted Tiki Room under new management. The original is back and we love it. It's dark, it's cool, it has music and happy birds. Even if it's not your cup of tea (and it probably will be) you can still get a good nap in a pleasant environment. Go to the Magic Kingdom and enjoy it, I'm there right now... woohoo!

The Moon over Daytona is awesome right now. This is the full moon and it it at perigee when the moon is closest to the Earth. The tides were nice and the moon is lovely. Just have a look...

June 22, 2013: It's a guy thing.

I have a list of events that I check and the list told me that today is the Polar Bear Swim. The second day of summer is the Polar Bear Swim???  Unless this is for the Southern Hemisphere, I am calling foul. But go to Norway in EPCOT and ride Maelstrom and enjoy the polar bears.

Today is Stupid Guy Thing Day. Men, just say, "It’s a stupid guy thing." Ladies, get over it, it’s a stupid guy thing. Remember, stupid guy things turn into Disneyland and Walt Disney World. They’re only stupid if they don’t work.

On this date in 1920, Paul Frees was born. There is no way I can list all of his voice work but here is a sample: John and George in The Beatles cartoon, The Flintstones, the Burgermeister Meisterburger in Santa Claus is Coming to Town, Ludwig Von Drake, The Absent-Minded Professor, The Ghost Host in the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of Caribbean. Hit the Magic Kingdom and enjoy Pirates and the Haunted Mansion.

Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.

June 21, 2013: Happy Summer

I love Bloom County. Bill the Cat and Opus the penguin are two of my favorite cartoon characters of all time. Berke Breathed, author of Bloom County, was born on this day in 1957 in Encino, California. Breathed’s Disney connection is less than stellar, Mars Needs Moms, his 2007 picture book was made into a movie that didn’t particularly do well. In fact it messed up the release of John Carter because Disney shied away from even using the word Mars in the title or promotion. It’s okay; both movies are better than their reputation. Let’s go to Hollywood Studios and celebrate all movies.

Today is the first day of summer. Summer begins with the Solstice, which takes place at 1:04 am today. This is also National Daylight Appreciation Day and National Flip Flop Day. It’s time for fun in the sun.

Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.

June 20, 2013: Monstrous Summer

I’m on vacation but we are still here to serve you.

Today is American Eagle Day. You should really take a minute to read all the reasons that American Eagle Day was proposed. I was overwhelmed. Let’s go to Hollywood Studios and watch Muppetvision 3-D and Sam the Eagle.

On this day in 1952, John Goodman was born. John is Dan Conner, James P. Sullivan, Sullivan Truck (Cars), “Big Daddy” La Bouff and the one-eyed Bible salesman in Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou? All of Walt Disney World is appropriate at this point as it is the “Monstrous” Summer.

Quickies:

1863: West Virginia is admitted as the 35th state. I can throw a rock from my property into West Virginia (across the river). Do The American Adventure at EPCOT. I will.

1928: Martin Landau was born in Brooklyn, New York. Landau has a long and esteemed career and then he was in Ed Wood with Johnny Depp. Ed Wood is one of my favorite movies and Johnny Depp is awesome as the cross-dressing, crazed director but Landau is beyond belief as Bela Lugosi. Just go watch it and do some Johnny Depp stuff at WDW.

Remember, your best excuse is always: waiting for your dreams to come true.

June 19, 2013: Greeeeeeen Acres is the place to be...

Today is Mr. Haney’s birthday. If you’re my age you probably remember Mr. Haney on Green Acres and Petticoat Junction. Mr. Haney was a salesman / low level con man that worked the community around Hooterville. He was a funny guy. Pat Buttram was born on this day in 1915 in Addison, Alabama. Buttram also had several Disney connections. Pat provided the voice of Chief in The Fox and the Hound, Luke in Rescuers, The Sherriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood and Possum Park Emcee in A Goofy Movie. Let’s search out Goofy and Max in favor of Pat’s last role.

On this date in 1965, Sean Marshall who played Pete in Pete’s Dragon was born in Canoga Park, California. Check out the parade and look for Pete and his dragon.

My favorite place to visit in The Magic Kingdom is not Cinderella Castle but is located in front of the castle. The Partners Statue featuring Walt and Mickey looking down Main Street, U.S.A. really sums up what The Magic Kingdom and Walt Disney World is all about, a man, a mouse and a vision. Walt is pointing and telling Mickey to, “Look at all the happy people.” This Sunday I will be happy, very happy.

Heart are a special group for me. I have seen them live several times and the first time I saw Heart was also my brother Bob’s first concert. He was twelve and Ann and Nancy Wilson flirted with him all night long, as he was the only twelve-year-old on the front row in a festival seating show. Nancy came out at the end of the show and gave him a thumb pick that we still have. Today is Ann Wilson’s birthday and we’ll not throw numbers around because we’re all older and life goes on. There’s live music at EPCOT all summer, check it out and think of Ann while you rock out.
